Modesto Does the Right Thing!
This is the same kind of treatment plant we've practically begged Sacramento to build.
May 23, 2013
Every now and then, something goes right. We congratulate the City of Modesto who will be cleaning up their sewage water before dumping it into the San Joaquin River Tributary to the Sacramento River Bay-Delta water system. That's something the City of Sacramento should also be doing. Modesto is building a tertiary waste water treatment plant that, according to the Modesto Bee, when completed in 2016 "will clean Modesto’s sewage waste water in order to comply with stricter sewage discharge standards mandated by the State Water Control Board." By complying with cleaning up their sewage water, Modesto can either discharge the “Cleaned Up Water” into the San Joaquin River Tributary to the Delta Water system or safely reuse the water on farms or other permitted uses.
This is the same kind of treatment plant we've practically begged Sacramento to build. Sacramento is the largest discharger of polluted sewage water into the Delta. Sacramento is currently permitted to DUMP over 180 Million Gallons of Polluted Sewage Water into the Sacramento River Bay-Delta Water system EVERYDAY. Everyday Sacramento is DUMPING Polluted Sewage into the drinking Water source for 25 million people downstream. This quite simply is NOT RIGHT and must stop! If Sacramento would install a tertiary sewage water treatment plant like Modesto and other cities have, Sacramento wouldn't have to dump all their crap (forgive us) into the Sacramento River Bay-Delta Water system.
Sacramento has been ordered to “CLEAN UP” their sewage waste water, but Sacramento has been fighting it in court. Even if Sacramento loses their court appeal, they has already been given an additional 2 years to complete the plant, with the new sewage plant not being completed until 2023. You will notice in the article below that Modesto will complete their plant in 2016.
Again, we congratulate Modesto on moving forward and urge Sacramento to do the same. Until Sacramento upgrades to the tertiary treatment plant they've been ordered to build, Sacramento will continue to dump harmful toxic pollutants into the Delta that kills fish like the Delta Smelt, destroys the Delta ecosystem and puts human health at risk.
Sacramento, Do the Right Thing. Please “Clean Up” your sewage water and stop dumping your polluted sewage toxins into the drinking water of 25-million Californians.
