When the Trump administration announced revisions to Endangered Species Act regulations for listing and reclassifying species, some people reacted to the news as if the president had tweeted a photo of himself with a bucket of Kentucky Fried Condor.
From the perspective of property owners, the Endangered Species Act itself is the bird of prey. Under the law, privately owned land that was acquired for the purpose of farming or ranching, for example, can be declared “protected habitat” for a threatened species, and that can force landowners to be nature’s hotel operators, legally required to provide room and board to the animals, birds, insects, rodents and plants that find the place to their liking.
